59. Muir Woods – Mill Valley, CA

We visited Muir Woods on a very foggy, drizzly kind of day. The paths were muddy and the views not that great but all in all, it is a beautiful place no matter what the weather and we enjoyed hiking the trails. The star attraction of Muir Woods is definitely the Coast Redwood. These relatives of the giant sequoia are are known for their height. While redwoods can grow to nearly 380 feet, the tallest one here is 258 […]

58. Alcatraz – San Francisco, CA

Let me preface this by saying that I wasn’t particularly excited about going to Alcatraz on our San Francisco vacation – I thought it was kind of a guy thing. But life and relationships are all about compromise so I went and I am very glad I did. We took the audio guided tour and I found it very, very interesting and not a guy thing at all. I did not know that the guards […]

57. Fisherman’s Wharf – San Francisco, CA

If you love fish and seafood, what’s not to love about Fisherman’s Wharf.  Hands down the best clam chowder I’ve ever eaten. But aside from the eating, we just loved hanging around down by the pier and watching the fishing boats come in with their catch. We just found it to be a great little area to people watch despite all the tourists and jip strip t-shirt and souvenir shops. One has to expect that anyway, […]

56. Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco, CA

This is the granddaddy of all bridges-a man-made engineering marvel-and while it’s not really a destination, Golden Gate Bridge is surely one of San Francisco’s most famous landmarks and you can’t miss it. We did drive across it, but it is best viewed (and photographed) from land and there is no shortage of great places to view it. My recommendation for the best shot is The Marin Headlands which is a beautiful destination in itself. Located at […]

55. Door County, Wisconsin

This was a whirlwind long weekend motorcycle trip we took with neighbors. And, while I could have easily blogged about each city in Door County independently (Fish Creek, Baileys Harbor, etc.), they all seem a bit of a blur even though I know we visited them all and each one was cuter than the last. We rented a log cabin on the lake through vrbo and that was the way to go for us.  The cabin was absolutely […]

54. Oak Creek Canyon – Sedona, AZ

Sedona has a world-wide reputation as a spiritual mecca and global power spot. The vortexes of Sedona are named because they are believed to be spiritual locations where the energy is right to facilitate prayer, mediation and healing.  I can’t really speak to that but it sure is awe inspiring when you first see the massive red rock formations.  While there we stayed at L’Auberge Sedona in a creekside cabin and that alone was a spiritual experience. Located […]

52. Loews Ventana Canyon – Tucson, AZ

This was my first visit to a Loews property and I hope not my last. While Tucson was probably not my favorite destination, Loews Ventana Canyon made the visit memorable and worthwhile.  A wonderful walking path with beautiful flora and fauna lead up to a waterfall. What I will always remember most about this trip is our meal at The Flying V.  To date, the best, most personal service I have ever had and an experience […]

53. Matthiessen State Park – Utica, IL

Matthiessen State Park is another of my favorite places to visit any time of the year.  And while most people would probably prefer the summer months, my favorite time of year to visit is actually in the dead of winter–especially after a big snow.  The prize is definitely the waterfall at the end of the trail which freezes solid and is absolutely beautiful. The hike down into the canyon and to the waterfall takes about […]
