Now this is one place in London you will spend a great deal of time at. You will also spend a great deal of ££ to do it. But of all the places to go in London, this one is a must. On top of being the home of the crown jewels, you will really get a sense of London’s bloody history. There are lots of nooks, crannies and turrets to explore with tales of death and beheadings. The Beefeaters are good fun and will pose for a photo op if you ask nicely. The grounds outside are also lovely for just sitting or having a picnic and on most days they have a kind of re-creation of the times. But my favorite bit of superstition is the ravens and their story. Legend says that the kingdom and the Tower will fall if the six resident ravens ever leave the fortress. It was Charles II, according to the stories, who first insisted that the ravens of the Tower should be protected. Despite their having one wing trimmed, some ravens do in fact go absent without leave and others have had to be sacked. Raven George was dismissed for eating the television antenna, and Raven Grog was last seen outside an East End pub. Today there are seven ravens at the Tower (the required six with one spare!). What’s even more interesting is that they eat 170g of raw meat a day, plus bird biscuits soaked in blood. Yikes!
