We had just one full day in Portland and were lucky enough to have it be a Saturday so we could go to the Portland Saturday Market. Open every Saturday and Sunday from March–December, the market is the largest continually operating arts-and-crafts fair in the United States, drawing up to 750,000 visitors during its annual season. I think there were at least 700,000 people there the day we visited (not really but it was very crowded) and we scored some great one of a kind treasures. Combining the vibes of an arts show, a live street concert and an open-air bazaar, this riverside market has been a beloved Portland tradition since 1974. Even more fun was the fact that our hotel, River Place, had bicycles for our use so we rode like the locals and didn’t have to worry about parking. River Place by the way was an awesome hotel with a great location (on the River-hence the name) close to downtown, beautiful rooms and a friendly, helpful staff. I’d stay there again in a minute. Other than the market and VooDoo Doughnut, we didn’t see much of the rest of Portland and I feel like I didn’t get a real good taste of everything the city had to offer. Hopefully my travels find me back there someday.
