51. The Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria – Rome, Italy

I could never have stayed at the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria on my salary but was fortunate to enjoy our last evening in Rome here due to the generosity of my good friend and travel companion. Pure luxury and unparalleled service is all I can say.  We also enjoyed rock star style in room dining and a gorgeous view of the city.  A great end to a great trip and if it’s within your budget, […]

50. Spanish Steps/Piazza di Spagna – Rome, Italy

Rome’s most famous steps, the Spanish Steps, are also known as Scalinata Spagna. Not only one of Rome’s most popular gathering places for tourists and locals, the steps are also one of the longest and widest staircases in all of Europe. 135 steps link the lower Piazza di Spagna with the upper Piazza Trinità dei Monti and its magnificent church.  At the base of the steps is the fountain called Fontana della Barcaccia (“Fountain of the Ugly Boat”).  […]

49. Isle of Capri & Anacapri – Campania Region, Italy

Capri is an enchanting and picturesque island in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is believed to have once been part of the mainland and is now only reachable by ferry.  There are only 2 towns on the island – Capri (being the main town where the ferry port of Marina Grande is located) and Anacapri. Capri is definitely the most touristy and contains plenty of high end shops and cafes. Anacapri is located in the highest part […]

48. Faraglioni Rock Formation – Isle of Capri, Italy

Wow!  Absolutely beautiful!  Capri’s most iconic sight is the dramatic Faraglioni, three towering rock formations which jut out from the Mediterranean just off the island’s coast. A snapshot with this breathtaking group of sea stacks in the background is a must for all visitors to Capri. Nothing more to be said….

47. Positano & Amalfi – Amalfi Coast, Italy

These are the places postcards and puzzles are made of.  Positano is an absolutely breathtaking and colorful village perched precariously along the most gorgeous stretch of Italian coastline. Literally almost cascading into the sea, it’s a dramatic vertical panorama of colors and an architectural wonder. We were part of a tour group so did not have nearly enough time to spend here……a great reason to go back.  We did, however, spend an afternoon in the […]

46. The Lemon Grove – Sorrento, Italy

Sorrento lemons are unlike the typical lemons you’ll find in American grocery stores…they are bigger, sweeter and the key ingredient in limoncello. And, right in the center of town, there is a whole city block filled with the lemon grove. You can smell the fragrant blossoms and sweet fruit long before you enter and once inside you can see the large lemons dangling heavy from the trees like balls of pure sunshine. In the heart of […]

45. Sorrento/Amalfi Coast – Compania, Italy

Hands down Sorrento was my favorite city on our tour of the Amalfi Coast. I just couldn’t get enough of the main cobbled shopping area (Piazza Tasso) with the colorful laundry hanging overhead, the men sitting outside their shops talking the day away, the world famous Gelateria Davide, and of course, the Limoncello (which they claim to have produced first).  One of the few places I would actually move to if I only could. Everyone […]

44. Sant’Angelo – Ischia, Italy

One of my favorite stops on our Ischia day tour was the colorful fishing village of Sant’Angelo with its characteristic boutiques, pastel buildings and locally made pottery.  We spent about an hour there and, while I would have enjoyed a much longer stay, it was a perfect little stop for a coffee or gelato.
